Learning to read is a skill that requires specific instruction. For some children learning to read can be a challenging and frustrating experience. Thirty-five years of research has identified that a structured literacy approach (sometimes called Orton Gillingham) is the most effective way to teach reading to all children, with or without reading difficulties. Structured literacy explicitly teaches reading and writing skills using simple techniques in a sequential and cumulative approach that are more memorable for children.
Traditional structured literacy curriculums use a print-to-speech approach. Current research has shown that a speech-to-print approach uses the brain's neurological, hard-wiring for speech and language development as a foundation for teaching reading and writing. This research-based, multi-linguistic methodology uses spelling as a gateway to reading and proves to be very effective in helping students become fluent readers and proficient writers. We find success with both approaches and incorporate individualized strategies from each to encourage a wholistic integration of language and literacy skills for broader improvement in academic skills.
In addition to explicit literacy skill development, we utilize an effective program to help build foundational skills for reading. Fast Forword and Clear Fluency are dynamic online programs proven to increase cognitive skill functioning, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Fast Forword offers engaging and motivating games to improve memory, attention, sequencing, and processing skills - skills that build a critical foundation needed for reading and increases one's availability to learn and retain literacy instruction. Clear Fluency uses advanced AI tools to individualize feedback in real time to improve reading fluency and reading comprehension.
